It's not only Sunday. But it's the Day After Christmas kind of Sunday. Which means that you have double excuse to sit back on your couch, get ahold of the remote controls, and not move all morning.
But you've got hours still until football. So how bout you spend an hour of that lazy day listening to something worthwhile. Like This American Life's Comedians of Christmas Holiday Special. Acts 3 and 5 are the best so have some patience or fast forward.
Enjoy.

Wigfield gives good opening.
And the best opening line of a book ever goes to...
"Words cannot describe all the things that I have left to write."
-Russell Hokes
(fictionalized author of Wigfield)
(actually written by Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello, and Stephen Colbert)

Mall closes. Man cannot shop. Man goes apesh*t.
Man completely loses his sh*t because his mall is closed. I completely lost my sh*t at my desk watching his tirade.

If you can't learn, at least you can laugh. The small good that came from last night's 826LA panel.
Last night I attended 826LA's Adult Writing Seminar on Comedy Writing. Did I get a whole lot out of the panel? Possibly not. You get that many egos in a room together who presume that they're just hilaaaarious, it's bound to turn into a panel about who likes the sound of their own voice best. But between wisecracking and a very few sound-bytes of actual advice (including treating ones parents like they're dead and writing below your intelligence level), I did have an opportunity to appreciate panelist Bob Odenkirk's dry wit. He was, undoubtedly, the most amusing on the panel and one couldn't help but to feel slightly inspired by him even if he didn't actually say anything inspiring...per say.
Here, Odenkirk's webisode which was screened at the panel. Enjoy.

Drama, tans and guidettes on Little Jersey Shore.
They may be just 4 years old, but the drama, broken hearts and fake tans are no less real on Little Jersey Shore than on MTV's grown up version. Um, okay--the fake tans are a little less real on the Lil version.

LaughTrack: Mandy Moore Gives Your Vagina Wings.
Mandy Moore's been trying to lose her good girl image since A Walk To Remember. We get it. She's a full grown woman now. She's married. She plays edgy bit roles in shows like, um, How I Met Your Mother.
But did you really think a spoof ad for high-energy douches would fast track you to bad girl infamy, Mandy? I'll have to ponder that while I go throw up a little bit in my mouth.

Puppets and perversion in Puppet Up!
I would generally steer as clear away from nightclub, Avalon Hollywood, as possible as I like to keep a healthy distance between myself and the ecstasy-influenced masses that frequent the club. But last Saturday night, I made an exception for the [pre-club night] showing of Puppet Up! Uncensored--where dozens of puppets (and their human puppeteer companions) took the stage at for an evening of improv, perversions, and occasional break-out into song. Patrick Bristow--who you might know from any number of roles (seriously--the dude's been in, like, everything--just check out his imdb page)--hosted the evening and led the cast through hilarious, audience-inspired scenes.Even KTLA reporter Allie McKay was in the house and made a surprise visit to the stage. And when I say 'surprise,' I mean she was in total shock to be called up and I hope that she's fully recovered. I don't know if she had stage fright or if she is really and truly scared of puppets. But kudos to the lady for getting up and 'puppeting up.'

Laugh Track: Upright Citizens Brigade
Sure, I started going to shows at the Upright Citizens Brigade (founded by Amy Poehler and other funny human beings) because I had to (classes at the theatre require two visits per term). But some of the best places I've ever visited would have gone unearthed had someone not forced me to go. Take the dentist, for example. Or jail. The line to get in is a complete and utter hassle, yes. But the entertainment inside is good. And it's cheap. And there aren't many good, cheap entertainment options left in Los Angeles. Aside from dog-walking and gender guessing games on the corner of Santa Monica and Vine, going out in this city's expensive.
I can only speak to two of the theatre's shows so far--'Facebook' (featuring cutie Ron Huebel of The Office and Human Giant) and 'The Smokes' (featuring no one I know but dudes who were funny all the same). And both are worth the $5 to get in. They are especially worth the free admission for UCB students.
Tip No. 1 - Arrive early to wait in the block-long lines that form before popular shows.
Tip No. 2 - Arrive with entertainment for the wait--be it a deck of cards, a bottle of wine in a paper bag with a straw, or another human being.
Tip No. 3 - Sitting on the stage looks like it would be fun--being part of the spotlight and the action and all. But, in fact, you end up unable to see half the cast's faces. Which is not that fun after all.
Tip No. 4 - Apparently 'ASSSSCAT' is one of the better shows. I haven't seen it. But I would like to give it a 3rd party recommendation anyway.
