I instantly thought that the women in the ad looks like she is being gang-raped, long before I even read your article against the idea & I have to think that even if it is supposed to depict an orgy, where does Calvin Klein get the right to but up billboards of such grotesque depictions??
In my opinion this ad is absolutely disgusting and I completely agree that it should be taken done.

We have had opportunity and security in the US throughout most of the 20th century. It's easy to assume that Americans "really don't have anything to complain about" or to blame ourselves for our failures and stresses. The struggles we have are largely concealed. Most of us really don't look different than the well clothed and successful generations of the previous century. Our consumer society makes it easy to access clothing and something that passes for food at a low cost -at least it seems that way. It's cheap at the check out counter. You can't tell by looking if someone is in over their heads with debt, has been forclosed on, has lost their marriage, or been abused. While some have gone relatively unscathed by recession and war many Amercians have struggled over the past several years. -Mike Sandbothe

I've been to California twice on my motorcycle - loved it. I was visiting my Hare Krishna sister in LA, then a friend in San Fran. I was so excited to cross the Golden Gate! Anyways, obviously my sister is a vegetarian but my eldest bro is as well and my late mom was too. Not me.

Jessie: Interesting post. I have to agree. Rape would have never crossed my mind. Just seems like a group sex scene and, as you say, Calvin Klein has long claimed the market on racy ads.

I can't help but to think of the ads featuring a 16 year old Brooke Shields and how they created an uproar that had many people screaming child pornography. As more brands push the envelope on advertising, I think it gets harder and harder to shock people. And, of course, in LA, our barometer is much more liberal than in places like the Midwest.

Thanks for the recap, Jessie. I had wanted to go to this event, but as a fellow vegetarian, I knew I'd lose out big time on the $45 ticket price. While large, these food fests don't cater to our veggie lifestyles (and $45 is a lot to spend on a couple tofu balls!).

Perhaps you and I should organize LA's first all-vegetarian food fest? I'm actually kinda serious on that... :->
